Bowlers head to national championships
THE western district will be well repre-sented at the Australian Indoor Bowls Championships, with several local players included in the Victorian team.
Congratulations to the following local bowlers who have earnt selection in the team:
Allansford - Jacinta Marney (ladies singles), Barb Draffen (skip, ladies fours), George Draffen (lead, men’s pairs), Sue Kerr (lead, ladies triples), Russell Kerr (second, men’s fours) and Max Heaton-Harris (men’s under 19 singles).
Koroit - Brendan Keane (skip, men’s fours), Debbie Keane (lead, ladies fours).
Grangeburn - Rylan Pech (men’s under 19 singles).
Port Fairy - Gill Phillips (skip, ladies fours).
Wannon Park - Maureen Drennan (lead, ladies pairs), Peter Baker (skip, mixed fours and Peter Meal (third, mixed fours).
Heytesbury players selected include the following:
Glenormiston - Bec Heard (third, ladies fours), Scott Pierce (lead, men’s fours), Harmony Rasmussen (ladies under 19 singles).
Laang-Ecklin - Pam Wines (skip, ladies tirples), Kathryn Wines (lead ladies fours).
Scott’s Creek - Allen Armistead (skip, mixed fours).
Timboon - Arthur Finch (men’s singles), Pam Dwyer (lead, mixed pairs), Lara Mungean (lead, ladies triples), Brett Mungean (skip, men’s triples) and Noah Mungean (third, men’s fours).
Many of these players play in both Warrnambool and Heytesbury competitions.
The Australian Championships are contested by five states, with each state entering two teams in each of the 12 disciplines.
The southwest this year provides over 40 per cent of the state team, showing the strength of indoor bowls in this region.
