Dennington’s Sarah Van Kempen and three year-old Fletcher McInnes were among a large crowd that gathered to enjoy last Friday night’s ‘Carols by the Merri.’

The community came out in droves for what was a highly successful ‘Carols by the Merri.’

Hundreds braved the cool and overcast conditions for an evening of music and traditional carols as children danced and sang on and off the stage.

Battery-operated candles, picnic rugs and blankets could be seen all over the lawns.

Children from St John’s and St Pius primary schools kept the crowd entertained with a variety of songs, along with Gabby Steele, Emmanuel College, Salvation Army Band, the Men’s Tin Shed Singers and Holiday Actors.

“Considering the weather wasn’t all that great, we were happy to see a crowd of about 1000,” John Harris, president of the Dennington Community Association said.

“Thanks to the support of the Warrnambool City Council and various sponsors we are able to put this on as a free community event, with entry via a gold coin donation.

“This year the money raised from entry will go towards the Warrnambool and District Community Hospice group.”

While the final tally is not yet known, Mr Harris is hoping this will amount to around $1000.

“The carols is always a wonderful community event, with various community groups helping out on the night.

“This year we had the local cricket club, football club, netballers, St John’s and the Nestle Rowing Club all doing various roles which was greatly appreciated and the kindergarten ran a raffle.”
