Cub group future uncertain

THE future of the Allansford Scout Group remains uncertain as the group desperately searches for a new leader.

The group, which currently has more than 20 active Cubs – several of whom recently returned from a memorable, action-packed Cubaree – has put an urgent call out for a volunteer leader to ensure the group can continue.

Current leader Gayle Drake has been at the helm for more than 36 years, during which time each of her four children enjoyed time in the group, but she says it’s now time to pass the reins.

“My children are all now grown adults and as much as I love my role here (with the Cubs) it’s really time someone younger and more agile took over,” she said.

“We have 20 Cubs at Allansford so it’s a very active, popular group and I would really hate to see it fold. The kids all have a great time and the Scout movement offers some activities that, for many children, they wouldn’t usually experience within their own families.

“We meet once a week during school terms and the activities are all loads of fun and they meet new friends and enjoy challenges, camps and lots of other things.”

Mrs Drake first joined the Allansford group as a volunteer at the age of 17 and within two years she had become a leader.

“It’s a very rewarding role and I’ve loved every moment of it,” she said.

“Watching the kids have fun and explore new things has been wonderful but it really is time for me to take a back step.

“The parents here are terrific but we are now putting out the call for someone to stick their hand up and volunteer to take over; if not the group may fold.”

Mrs Drake informed families in March this year that she would continue for another 12 months and during that time would be happy to “train” the next leader.

Unfortunately that ‘next leader’ has yet to come forward.

“With the months flying by so quickly March will be here before we know it,” she said.

“And to be honest it saddens me to think this could be the end of the Allansford Scout Group; the closest ones from here are in Warrnambool or Koroit and that would put added pressure on those groups.”

Anyone interested in becoming the next leader is urged to contact Gayle Drake on 0428 651 621.
