Enjoy a walk through time
LOCALS and visitors to Port Fairy can enjoy a ‘walk through time’ on Friday, May 10.
The annual, free event will again be presented by the Port Fairy Historical Society and will give people the chance to learn more about some of the town’s historical buildings.
The walk will begin at Fiddler’s Green, on the corner of Bank and Sackville streets, at 1pm.
The stories of the many businesses in Sackville Street, and one in Cox Street, will be presented by Richard Patterson, Carol Heard, Dr Frances Guyett, Glen Foster and Anthony Phillips.
The guest speakers will talk about the history of the various buildings chosen and then break into smaller groups to walk around the streets, answering questions at the site of the buildings.
Some of the buildings that will be visited include Jago’s Garage (which has been in the Jago family for over 100 years) and the current supermarket (which originally had five different shops).
The site of Tennyson’s Hotel, which was burnt down in the 1970s, will also be visited, along with Brookes Hardware (formerly Guyett’s Furniture Store).
