Finals for indoor bowls

WARRNAMBOOL indoor bowls teams contested the second week of finals last Monday night.

By Staff Writer

In division one the two Allansford teams played each other, with Rob McCrabb’s Cougars playing Barb Draffen’s Panthers.

The Cougars got off to a good start leading 4-0 after the first two ends.

The Panthers made a comeback and led after end four, 5-4, but the Cougars found their strength and won the next four ends to lead 13-5.

The Panthers fought back to trail by only three shots on end 12, but the Cougars proved why they finished second on the ladder, dominating the remaining ends to win 23-13.

Division 2 saw a match of two halves with Clarrie Matthews’ Allansford Pumas up against Max Heard’s Koroit Jets.

The Jets dominated the first 11 ends to lead 17-5 which looked, to all spectators, to be a winning lead.

On end 12, the kitty was knocked off the mat, resulting in a two shot penalty for Koroit.

When the Pumas scored two on the replayed end, it seemed to give them a new lease of life.

Another 9-1 over the next four ends saw both teams level on end 16 with 18 shots each and only two ends remaining.

Koroit held a one shot lead going into the final end, but with the Pumas scoring two on the last end it was a nail biting finish to what was the closest match of the evening.

Division three was played between Gill Phillips’ Port Fairy Seagulls and Ian Heatley’s Allansford Jaguars.

Port Fairy proved too strong on the night and led comfortably all match, winning 24-12.

The grand finals will be played at the ARC stadium next Monday, February 26 from 7.30pm.

In division one, Heytesbury Honeys will play Allansford Cougars and division two will be played between the Koroit Hornets and Allansford Pumas.

Division three will see Dennington Devils take on the Port Fairy Seagulls.

Some close games are expected during the finals.

Those who can’t be at the stadium will be able to watch the games via a live stream on the Warrnambool indoor bowls facebook page from 7.30pm.
