The walk, next Thursday January 16, will be led by curator John Sheely and is an initiative of the Friends of Warrnambool Botanic Gardens (FOWBG).

“This is a unique opportunity for all those who would love to know more details about the plants, trees and built features of the gardens,” FOWBG committee member Penny Irons said.

“John is familiar with every square metre of the gardens and although the gardens are more than 150 years old, he is just the sixth curator and is about to begin his 19th year in the role.

“For those interested in coming along, we’ll meet at 10am at the Rotunda and the 45-minute walk will proceed regardless of the weather.

“Whether you’re a visitor to Warrnambool or a resident you’ll learn something new and gain a deeper appreciation of the role that botanic gardens play in a city.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the gardens were a stunning community asset that were constantly evolving while retaining key heritage features.

“In recent years we’ve seen the addition of the Nature-based Play Space, new garden beds and the restoration of paths which improves access for everyone,” Cr Blain said.

“Whether you’re a regular visitor to the gardens or you’ve never been, I encourage you to take the opportunity to be a part of the guided walk.”
