Help for those in need

WITH so many people doing it tough recently, a band of volunteers at Anglicare’s drop-in centre are working hard to make life that little bit easier.

Volunteers Trevor and Ken provide a warm welcome, and a “tasty toastie,” to visitors at Anglicare Warrnambool’s drop-in centre.

For those who are struggling to make ends meet, who are homeless or in search of a home, or those who simply need a warm place to spend a few hours and have a bite to eat, the centre’s doors are open.

“Anglicare is a state-wide organisation that supports families and individuals in need of some assistance,” Ballarat manager Kim Boyd said.

“Our food relief centre is open every weekday, except Thursday, from 10am until 12 noon.

“People with a health care card are most welcome to come in for food assistance, no appointment is needed. We can have anywhere between two and 13 people each day, with an average of around half a dozen visitors.”

The drop-in centre at Anglicare is also open during those times, with volunteers serving up toasted sandwiches and a hot cuppa.

Volunteer Ken Sharp said he enjoys time spent in the kitchen and with centre visitors.

“It’s wonderful to be able to give back to the community like this, and to know that the little bit you are doing can mean a lot to someone else,” Mr Sharp said.

“I enjoy having a chat with visitors and they also seem to like the companionship – and who doesn’t enjoy a ham and cheese toastie?”

Along with a hot cuppa and a snack, Ms Boyd said the centre also has showers available and a pool table for use.

“Some people drop in for something to eat and a hot shower,” she said.

“We provide towels and toiletries and for those sleeping rough, whether they are couch surfing, having short-term stays or homeless this is a safe and welcoming environment.

“We can also refer people on to other agencies, such as Brophy, for additional assistance.”

The drop-in centre at Anglicare Warrnambool has been running for several years and relies on volunteers to continue its operation.

Ms Boyd said anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is most welcome to call in during opening hours and leave their contact details.

“You can never have too many volunteers,” she said.

“They are always welcome here and very much appreciated.”
