Clear skies and a slight breeze greeted participants in last weekend’s inaugural fun run/walk along the highway in Warrnambool.

Organised by members of the Warrnambool Athletics Club, the 2.5km event attracted a field of well over 80 particpants.

Club president Peter Molan said he was thrilled with the response and the turn-out.

“Because it was a free event and results weren’t recorded we can only get an estimate of how many people entered,” he said “We had about 80 registrations but there was probably quite a few more than that.

“It was great to see so many families out there taking advantage of the chance to run or walk along a stretch of the highway that was closed to traffic - we even had a lady with her dog and our secretary Gerard Atkinson ran in a penguin suit which was entertaining.”

The Warrnambool Athletics Club holds weekly runs around Flagstaff Hill each Wednesday throughout January with proceeds donated to a charity or a group of their choice.

This year the money will be donated to the Middle Island Penguin Project.
