Initiatives help boaters return safely to the water
WITH the warmer weather just around the corner, local boaters are being urged to start preparing their vessels for a return to the water.
In order to help boaters return safely two boating safety initiatives were launched earlier this week.
This includes a new partnership between Safe Transport Victoria and the maritime smartphone app DECKEE – and the seasonal Back to Basics program.
Both initiatives were recently launched at the 2024 Melbourne Boat Show at Docklands.
“Victoria’s waterways are perfect for a day of boating, fishing, jet-skiing or paddle boarding,” Minister for Outdoor Recreation Steve Dimopoulos said.
“Downloading DECKEE and following the Back to Basics program helps vessel owners enjoy their time on the water while making sure they return home safely.”
Safe Transport Victoria’s partnership with DECKEE provides Victorian boaters with a smarter way to get information on mandatory safety equipment and waterway rules that, thanks to the GPS capabilities of DECKEE, are relevant to their location and vessel type.
DECKEE shows weather forecasts, wave and tide information.
It also features details of boat ramps and has the capability to record a boater’s trip, allowing family and friends to see the boater’s location in real time.
Safe Transport Victoria’s seasonal Back to Basics program provides simple, yet essential tips on boat maintenance and safety equipment, teaching boaters how to achieve safe and trouble-free boating.
In 2023-24, 85 per cent of marine incidents were due to vessel disablement, commonly caused by motor breakdowns, equipment failure, or running out of fuel.
Regular maintenance is critical to preventing these issues.
Back to Basics covers all the essentials to help prevent mishaps, from routine maintenance of the engine, hull and electrical systems, to ensuring fuel levels are sufficient and lifejackets are ready for use.
