Poets far and wide are being encouraged to put pen to paper for the Koroit Irish Festival Poetry Championship.

The championship is open to all festival ticket holders, with poems to have, as part of their content, references to Koroit or the Irish.

The festival’s 2024 theme of ‘Irish Love’ is also being encouraged as a source of inspiration.

There is a maximum of 250 words per poem.

All poems will be displayed at the festival, with the winner to be presented and read out in front of a packed house in the Koroit Theatre on the Saturday afternoon of the festival.

Koroit Irish Festival committee member Kyra Gillespie said the festival had held a poetry competition in its early years.

“We think the time is right to bring poetry back,” Ms Gillespie said.

“Poetry and amazing writing are such an important part of Irish culture.

“We are really excited about the works people will send in to be part of it all.”

The poetry championship follows the introduction of the Kortraits art competition last year.

This will again be happening in 2024, with entries still open.

Kortraits is open for artists to enter a piece of work on a Koroit person or place.

The Australian Danny Boy Championship is also now open for entries and all three competitions can be entered by emailing info@koroitirishfestival.com.au.

The Koroit Irish Festival will run from April 26-28.
