Rally adds to tally
EMMANUEL College is $10,000 closer to its $1.5 million target for a new Edmund Rice Centre thanks to last week’s ‘Rice Rally’.
There was plenty of excitement and action both on and off the basketball court on Friday afternoon when a group of students took on an ‘All Stars’ team – and won.
Played in front of a large crowd, anticipated at more than 1,000, the game offered non-stop action with both sides taking advantage of turnovers and showing great team-work both in and out of the key.
All Stars player Steve Kerr was voted MVP by the crowd.
Emmanuel students Olly Harris (scoring three, three-pointers) and Eve Covey (two, three-pointers) were strong contributors to the scoreboard while Charlie McKinnon also starred on the court.
The game was tight for the first three quarters but in the final five minutes the students took off and clenched victory, 39-30.
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the day, students and visitors enjoyed a sausage sizzle and various food vans while among the special guests were Rookie, Jonathan Brown and Gorgi Cochlan – who were happy to feature in the live broadcast.
Emmanuel College principal Peter Morgan, Brian Brown (chair of the capital campaign committee) and fellow Alumni Dave Hughes were also courtside for all the action.
The private phase of the appeal has already raised around $300,000 and together with Friday’s $10,000 the school is thrilled with the “wonderful start” to the Edmund Rice Centre appeal.
