Wunta moves to racecourse

WARRNAMBOOL’S popular, family-friendly Wunta Fiesta will return to the town in 2024.

The three-day event, which encompasses wine, food and music, will next year be held at the Warrnambool Racecourse on February 16, 17 and 18.

According to president of the organising committee, Daryl Hose, the decision to move the event to the racecourse was reflective of rising costs and various other “hurdles” which made holding it in the main street near-impossible.

“There were many obstacles we were facing when looking at having Wunta down the street and in the Civic Green or gardens,” Mr Hose said.

“We are a volunteer committee and this event has been running for more than three decades; we wanted to do everything we could to ensure it continues.

“Wunta is all about community, and offering families an entertaining, low-cost event that features local musicians, local foodies.”

The racecourse proved the “ideal fit” for Wunta according to the committee, which has now grown in numbers since a meeting earlier this week.

“We had a call out for volunteers and we now have about 21 active members, with about 14 on the committee which is just amazing,” Mr Hose said.

“We’re now working hard to ensure the three day event next year has something for everyone.”

It is anticipated the Friday evening will kick start celebrations with food, wine and music.

Saturday will feature jazz performers and a special kids’ area offering free activities – including building things from recyclable materials and, hopefully, free rides.

Music will continue throughout Sunday, with markets and a show and shine also to feature on the program of events.

“We’re hoping to have a big name play on the Sunday night (yet to be confirmed) which will be the perfect ending to what hopefully will be a wonderful 2024 Wunta Fiesta.”

Mr Hose and his committee are currently searching for event sponsors, with donations of all sizes gratefully received.

“Whether someone is interested in becoming a major event sponsor, or just looking at possibly contributing a prize for a raffle or spinning wheel, all donations are most welcome.”

Anyone wishing to become a Wunta volunteer, or keen to learn more about sponsorship, phone Mr Hose on 0418 529 921 or email president@wunta.com.au.
